A modest family of Greek farmers living on the mountains in the district of Phthiotida are engaged in the historical adventures of our homeland during the period of a century (1821-1923).<\/h6>\n
Dimitrios Phikas participates in the National War for Liberation from the very start (1821).<\/h6>\n
Pericles Phikas participates in the struggle for Macedonia (1904-1908). He immigrates to the United States in 1910 but abandons the prospect of a better life in order to return to our homeland as a volunteer and to participate in the 2nd Balkan War (Evzoni Regiment).<\/h6>\n
Demosthenes Phikas, draftee 1911-1912, participates in the 1st and 2nd Balkan Wars (Cavalry Brigade), in World War I and in the Asia Minor Expedition.<\/h6>\n
He meets his four older brothers after the battle of Tzoumayia (1913) as all of them participated in the same battle. He is promoted for brave deeds and retires after 12 years of service as a Cavalry Colonel.<\/h6>\n
These people were not known heroes, although they often surpassed themselves. They were simple, ordinary people like millions of other Greeks whose lives suddenly changed because of a terrific event – war. They served long-term military service far away from home; they lost relatives and friends and felt the fluttering of death all around them. Their small dreams became visionary projects and Great Ideas. They are not mentioned in history books, rather, they have \u201cwritten\u201d their own History.<\/h6>\n
